Storage & demos

What the learning demos read or store in your browser, when this happens and how to remove their own demo data.

Information about this public website

Operator details and description of the current website operation. Updated October 13, 2026.

  2. Recognition: up to 24 hours
  3. Trace experiment: up to 30 minutes

Before starting an experiment

The ordinary information articles do not need demo storage. When “My traces” loads, it reads and displays browser characteristics such as language, time zone, screen and viewport size, pixel density and available processor, memory and touch-input information. This script does not store, hash or transmit them.

Opening demo pages also reads any existing data in the respective demo’s own storage. These reads happen before another click. A canvas drawing is created and evaluated locally only after its corresponding action; it is not stored or sent as a fingerprint.

Recognition: up to 24 hours

On “My traces”, only the remember action creates a random identifier with creation and expiry times in localStorage under darkwebguide.demo.recognition.v1. It demonstrates recognition within the same website origin and browser profile without needing your name.

Its intended validity is 24 hours. An expired or invalid entry is removed on the next check or page load. No deletion process runs while the browser is closed. When storage access is permitted, Reset removes the demo’s entry immediately; alternatively, clear the site’s data in your browser.

Trace experiment: up to 30 minutes

Only starting the trace experiment creates experiment state in sessionStorage under darkwebguide.demo.trail.v1. A still-valid active experiment can resume when a participating page opens. The demo records visits, example selections and active time on its own games, sport and travel pages.

Logical validity is 30 minutes from the start. Expired or invalid data are removed on the next check. sessionStorage belongs to the tab’s browser session; session restoration may affect its behaviour. Use Reset or browser data controls to make sure the state is removed.

Keystroke contents are not read and mouse coordinates are not stored. Idle time beyond 30 seconds and hidden or unfocused pages do not count as active time. Quiz answers and the fictional example identity are not persistently stored. Experiment observations stay local.

Public website without the server demo

darkwebguide.net serves the learning pages as static files. The additional local endpoint /__dwg_demo/connection is not published. There is no active server connection demo and no dwg_demo_server_v1 cookie here.

Browser learning features work independently. Ordinary page requests may appear in DreamHost’s server logs; see the privacy notice.

Your controls

You can read the information articles without activating demos and without JavaScript. Existing demo data can be removed with the respective reset buttons. Your browser’s site-data settings provide another deletion option.

Deleting a demo entry does not remove independent server or email logs. An expired identifier also does not mean that someone is anonymous or that other websites have no data of their own.

Version and changes

This description was checked against the supplied browser scripts on October 13, 2026. It will be updated when the learning features change.
